Malta – one of the best diving destinations in the world

Just a few fin strokes away from Germany, Malta , with its sister islands of Gozo and Comino, offers one of the world's best diving destinations. This has been confirmed several times with the "boot dive award." But Malta also has a lot to offer for those on land.

The conditions are ideal: minimal currents, no tides, and mild temperatures year-round. Water temperatures range between 13 and 23 degrees Celsius. Malta, Gozo, and Comino have been recognized for the "uniqueness of their diving area" for the third time.

Underwater world full of colors and wrecks

Once you've submerged yourself along the Mediterranean island, the underwater world will captivate you with its colorful flora and fauna. Bright red parrotfish, colorful mergansers, gurnards, and the beautiful long-snouted seahorse are clearly visible at depths of up to 50 meters.

In addition to the rocky underwater bottoms, wreck diving is a highlight. Around 60 ships lie sunk around the smallest EU state – from a 2,700-year-old Phoenician wreck to the submarine "Stubborn" and the passenger steamer SS Margit. The wrecks form artificial reefs and enrich the ecosystem.

Around 200 dive sites with wrecks, caves, and reefs invite you to explore this diverse underwater world. Over 40 dive centers cater to beginners and professionals alike – with equipment, courses, and boat trips.

A special highlight is the Cirkewwa Marine Park on Malta's northwest coast. Since 2019, it has offered a protected area with pristine underwater landscapes, including the striking Cirkewwa rock arch. More information about the Cirkewwa Marine Park

Culture, history & cuisine on land

Despite all the passion for the underwater world, Malta's land-based life should not be forgotten. Among the attractions are:

  • the Hypogeum (3800–2500 BC), an underground temple complex

  • prehistoric temple sites

  • Traces of the Order of Malta

  • Megaliths, medieval walls and caves

As small as Malta is, the island world offers experiences for every taste. Divers and culture vultures will also find something to suit their tastes: Malta's cuisine combines Mediterranean, Arabic, and English influences.

Festas in Malta – celebrate with passion

The Catholic faith is deeply rooted in Malta: Over 90 percent of Maltese people belong to the Roman Catholic Church. From May to October, almost every parish celebrates its saint—around 100 festivals in Malta and Gozo.

Streets are colorfully decorated, firecrackers are fired, and bells ring to open each festa. Brass bands parade through the alleys, and processions with statues of patron saints dominate the scene. Visitors and locals celebrate together with music, local specialties, and great devotion – an unforgettable experience.
