The exhibition shows 30 fascinating works of art by Constant Permeke (1886 to 1954), which illustrate his versatility and pioneering character. It invites visitors to view Permeke’s art from new perspectives. Special loans from private collections and museums have been made available for this exhibition. This is the first exhibition following the renovation of the Permeke Museum.

Constant Permeke is often regarded as a central figure of Flemish Expressionism, although he was more of an outsider. He pursued an idiosyncratic path between Cubism, Expressionism and Humanism. His works show unadulterated portraits, everyday scenes and landscapes that emphasise the connection between man and nature. Permeke experimented with techniques, materials and formats in order to break taboos and transcend the boundaries of art. He was always looking for new ways to combine and innovate drawing, painting and sculpture.

Luc Peire (1916 - 1994) created the fascinating installation Environnement I in 1967. The installation space in his former residence at 64 De Judestraat in Knokke consists of four equally sized square mirrors on the top and bottom and is composed of four vertically positioned, painted Resopal panels. Fluorescent tubes behind matte milk plexiglass provide a milky-white interior illumination. The middle section of the front wall, which opens outward, serves as an entrance door. Music by Louis De Meester accompanies the endless reflections. Visitors „experience“ the artist’s universal artistic language and infinite spatial verticality. The artwork was loaned permanently to Knokke by the Jenny & Luc Peire Foundation in 2007 where it has been exhibited in a specially designed „garden room“ since 2011.
