The apple – more than a piece of fruit
The apple is more than just a piece of fruit. From Adam and Eve to the grocery store in the 21st century, it is one of humanity's oldest cultivated plants.
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away" – we all know this saying about the apple's great health potential. Estimates suggest that the sweet fruit originated in Central Asia, present-day Kazakhstan. Around 4,000 years ago, the apple reached Europe via trade routes like the Silk Road.
This former paradise fruit feels particularly at home in South Tyrol , specifically in the apple town of Leifers near Bolzano. With 18,000 hectares, it is one of the largest contiguous apple-growing areas in Europe. Thanks to a favorable location at the foot of the Alps, a mild climate, and over 300 days of sunshine, farmers harvest around 32,000 tons of crisp, sweet apples annually. Around 220 family farms cultivate a total of 13 apple varieties – including Pink Lady, Golden Delicious, and Royal Gala.
On the trail of a natural snack
Hildegard von Bingen already knew about the healing power of the apple. Tender, easily digestible, and cooked, the fruit has medicinal value.
This importance also plays a major role in tourism in the apple town. A roughly seven-kilometer circular hiking trail in Leifers leads from the center through the apple orchards. Every Wednesday, there's an apple expedition with insights into local farms, where farmers explain their work.
Of course, a tasting is a must: In addition to different apple varieties, guests can also sample fresh juices – and here and there, there's a slice of apple pie.
Registration is available through the Leifers Tourist Office (price: €6, free with the Bozen Card). Information about the Apple Hike in Leifers
Bolzano Apple Oktoberfest
On October 11, Bolzano takes over the apple reign. With a large farmers' market and a colorful supporting program, the city celebrates the vitamin-rich fruit.
A popular attraction is the "Steiner." Today known as Hotel Campingpark Steiner , the hotel became famous in the 1960s for having the first swimming pool in town.
Known for its wines, apples also play an important role in the family business. Guests will find a wide variety of apple creations in the restaurant: from cakes and jams to chips, chutneys, and even sourdough apple bread. The breakfast buffet features a dedicated apple corner.
